7 Different Parenting Styles To Be Aware of

There is no set rule of parenting. Every parent has their way of understanding and dealing with the kids. There is no particular parenting style that works well with all the families. Even cultural backgrounds have a major impact on how kids are brought up in a family.

Over the years, many studies have been conducted to know about various parenting styles. It was psychologist Diana Baumrind at the University of California at Berkeley, who first researched the different parenting styles.

Later, other researchers expanded the model based on Baumrind’s work. Today, even new-age parents are coming up with new terms for parenting. Curious to know about different parenting styles? Then, keep scrolling the page to learn about it.

1. Authoritative Parenting

Authoritative parents usually set clear rules and expectations for their kids while guiding them along the way. They believe in solving the problem together with the kids. Communication plays an important role in this parenting style. These parents usually listen to kids’ concerns and feelings and consider them. Overall, such parents try to maintain a positive relationship with their kids.

2. Authoritarian Parenting

Authoritarian parents are generally the strict ones. They want their kids to follow the rules they set without any expectations or questions. Moreover, they don’t bother to consider their kid’s feelings or opinions in any matter. It’s either their way or the highway.

3. Permissive Parenting

Permissive parents allow kids to be kids. They do not enforce rules and regulations on them. Such parents are more lenient and offer help only when their kids are in some serious trouble. They often forgive their kid’s mistakes and rarely punish them for their wrongdoings.

4. Uninvolved Parenting

As the name suggests, uninvolved parents do not show much interest in their kid’s activities or life in general. They even have very little knowledge about their child’s development. Kids of such parents do not receive much nurturing, caring, and positive environment to grow emotionally. Even experts have advised not to follow such a parenting style.

5. Attachment Parenting

Such parents focus primarily on developing a secure, deep bond with their kids. They usually respond sensitively when they hear their kids cry and provide constant love and care. The attachment parenting style also uses the technique of positive discipline with kids.

6. Helicopter Parenting

Helicopter parenting is also sometimes referred to as lawnmower parenting. These over-involved parents are even called bulldozers or snowplow parents. Such parents “hover” over their kids constantly and do not give them a chance to learn problem-solving skills. These parents are always ready to tackle the problem for their kids.

7. Free-Range Parenting

Free-range parents let kids explore things with little or no supervision. They encourage independence as long as it is within the law. They do set certain rules and expectations but overall allow their kids to function independently.

So, whatever style you choose (or a combination of styles) always keep your kid’s interests in mind. With dedication and commitment, you can become the best parent to your child and help them grow emotionally and physically.
