The rechargable batteries in the Summer Infant video monitors were recalled by the U.S. Government today. To date, the company has recieved 22 reports of batteries overheating and rupturing—in some cases, smoke was present, and minor property damage occured.
The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission notes that the recall applies to over a dozen video models made by Summer Infant, including the Baby Touch, Safe Light, and Slim & Secure monitors.
This was not the first time Summer Infant’s products have been recalled: about 58,000 batteries were recalled in 2011 for similar overheating and burn hazards.
How do I know if my video monitor’s battery has been affected?
To check:
Open the back compartment of your monitor handheld unit and check your battery’s markings, explained in the video below:
Batteries that may be affected will include a letter & number combination in the beginning of the serial number on the back of the battery. Click here to view all affected batteries.
If I own a Summer Infant video monitor with an affected battery, what should I do next?
- Remove the battery.
- Complete Summer Infant’s online form to receive a replacement battery.
The monitor can continue to be used on AC power with power cord.
