I am a big fan of long necklaces. They work with almost any outfit and generally give an outfit a cool/relaxed vibe. So, I thought I would make my own, and I’m showing you how to make one too.
This is a great DIY to try with older kids too (with supervision of course, since you’ll be using nail polish).
Here’s how to make unique beaded necklaces with colorful paint in thirty minutes or less…
Supplies:
- Beads
- Waxed cotton or leather cord
- Nail polish
- Primer or gesso (if using wood beads)
- Paintbrush
- Washi or painter’s tape
- Wood skewers
- Scissors
Instructions:
Step 1: To get started, pick out the beads you’d like to use. Then, apply gesso with a paintbrush to any wood beads that you want to paint a solid color. Allow the gesso to dry completely before moving on to step two.
Step 2: Now you’re ready to start adding color. Use the wood skewers to help hold the beads and paint the gessoed bead with nail polish.
Step 3: You can also try out patterns with the other beads, such as brush strokes, diamonds, and stripes. The brush strokes can be done in any pattern that you like.
Step 4: The diamond shape was painted onto a faceted bead, so I was able to follow the lines of the facets on the bead.
Step 5: For the striped bead, use the washi or painter’s tape to mask off the stripe. Paint the exposed strip. After one minute, before the paint has fully dried, carefully peel the tape off.
Step 6: After the beads have dried, arrange them to your liking and string them onto the cotton or leather cord.
Step 7: Knot the end, and it’s ready to wear.
