DIY Birch Bark Napkin Rings

When autumn rolls around, I am always looking for fun ways to decorate the house to celebrate the changing of the season. Fall means lots of fun colors, woodsy decorations, and pumpkins galore. This year, I am hosting a few holiday meals at my house, and I want to create a decorative table for all the special occasions. I’ve been itching to do some projects with birch bark, so I decided to make some DIY birch bark napkin rings for my fall dining table. These are super easy to make, and you can easily crank out ten of them in under a half hour. Let’s get started!

Supplies:

  • Birch bark
  • Scissors
  • Crop-a-dile (or any hole punch will do, but the Crop-a-dile makes awesome tiny holes)
  • Leather string
  • Napkins

Instructions:

Step 1: Start by cutting your birch bark into one-inch strips about four inches long. Birch bark has varying thicknesses, so find a piece that is thick enough so it won’t break when bent into a small circle, but thin enough that you can cut it easily with scissors and punch a hole through it.

Step 2: Take a strip of birch bark and curve it into a circle so the two ends are overlapping. You can adjust your length and the amount they overlap to get the size of circle you want. It all depends on how thick your napkins are. Punch two small holes in the overlapping wood.

Step 3: Cut about four inches of leather string off and loop it through the holes. Tie a square knot, right over left and then left over right. Trim the excess string.

That’s it! What could be simpler? Load these little rings up with your napkins and set that table. I bet you could make a whole set while you are waiting for the oven to preheat.
