Dalgona Whipped Coffee Is Worth Waking Up For

One of the things that many of us are missing the most while being home is being able to get a great cup of coffee. Self-isolation is synonymous with “no Starbucks,” and that’s a huge bummer. That’s why the timing of the dalgona whipped coffee trend couldn’t be more perfect. This light and frothy coffee drink comes from South Korea (is named after a Korean sweet called dalgona or ppopgi )and it has gone viral on Instagram and TikTok.

Dalgona whipped coffee promises a creamy, fluffy cup of coffee with three key ingredients (instant coffee, boiling water and sugar), whipped to perfection, and poured over a cold or hot cup of milk. So, is dalgona whipped coffee worth all the hype and forearm exercise? I say yes! In less than 7 minutes (and without a fancy espresso machine), I can whip a cup of delicious coffee that resembles a caramel milkshake.

Here’s how you can wake up, and whip the coffee!

Dalgona Whipped Coffee

Ingredients:

  • Instant Coffee, Nescafe (or instant espresso)
  • Boiling water
  • Sugar
  • Whisk or hand-mixer
  • Milk

Directions:

Step 1: Add coffee, boiling water and sugar to a bowl. The ratio for this coffee is equal parts of each ingredient, so it’s a ratio of 1:1:1. For one cup of coffee, you will need about 2 tablespoons of each ingredient. For this recipe, I used 1/4 cup instant coffee, boiling water and sugar and it was enough for about 2-4 people (depends on the day, and how much coffee one needs).

Step 2: Vigorously and continuously stir the ingredients with a whisk, or with a hand mixer for approximately 5-7 minutes. You will see the initial watery mixture magically turn thicker and thicker with each passing minute until it’s frothy and resembling whipped cream that forms “peaks”. The color will also change from a dark brown to a lighter, caramel color. I used a whisk, which worked great!

Step 3: Pour warm or cold milk in a glass, 8 oz. or less. Scoop 3-4 tablespoons of the whipped coffee on top of the milk. I made it with cold milk, sans ice cubes, and it was so yummy! Initially I admired the white and caramel layer of colors, and then mixed it gently, so the flavors combined. Cheers!
