2 Easy Holiday Hairstyles With Clip-In Extensions (Tutorial)

Clip-in hair extensions are the easiest way to add instant volume, thickness and length to any hairstyle. And if there’s ever a time you want a quick way to achieve a pretty hairstyle in just a few minutes, it’s during the holiday season. I’m here to help! I devised two original quick and simple hair tutorials using clip-in extensions to get you looking polished and pretty in a jiffy. In fact, the second tutorial is a day-to-night combo making it a win-win for those living that #MomLife!

Whether you’re meeting up for a coffee date, attending a holiday work party, or dressing up for a swanky shin-ding, a little help from extensions can truly transform your hair in seconds. We used Bohyme Body Wave Clip-Ins for these tutorials (retailers nationwide) to add volume, length, and texture – making each look easy to DIY this holiday season.

The Tiered Braid

BEFORE

You want the addition of your extensions to look seamless so go with the real deal…real hair that is!

Step 1: Unclip and place extensions. Seek real Remi hair extensions to achieve that natural look, feel, and bounce. Also, real hair extensions allow you to curl your extensions whereas synthetic varieties cannot handle the heat of curling irons and often have a shiny filmy cast.

Step 2: Section-off your hair in layers starting at the base of the crown or the nape of the neck depending on your length of hair. Apply clip-in wefts near the scalp and snap clips to secure. Out of the seven clip-in extensions in the bundle, we only used five wefts to create all the looks featured here. A little help really does go along way.

Step 3: Create your first tiered braid. This braid doesn’t get any easier as you’re not even having to fuss with actual braiding. In fact, this hack is great for those of you who find it difficult to braid your own hair (especially in the back). To get this look, gather about two inches of hair from each side of the top crown and gather it into half-updo style with an elastic band. Pro Tip: Leave face-framing sides down for a soft dreamy look that flatters from all angles.

Step 4: Loop in the faux braid by lifting your ponytail upward and looping it overtop. The visual result is a faux braid. Magic, isn’t it? Catch the looped look below.

Step 5: Repeat the same process above to create two more tiered layers. You’ll begin seeing a long layered tiered braid with the help of your extensions right about NOW.

Step 6: After creating your third tier, wrap about two inches of hair from the bottom of your final ponytail to hide the elastic. Use hairpins to pin any loose strands in place but do not worry about it looking perfect. The messier the better with this ‘do.

The final look is flirty, polished, and modern with a touch of sexy. This look will even dress up a rainbow array of holiday sweaters!

The Dressy Pony & Bun

Learn how to maximize your basic ponytail with extensions and how to DIY a nice full bun in a cinch with the transitional tutorial below for our second step-by-step in this series.

BEFORE

Step 1: DIY a full pony. With your extensions in place (again, we used just five of the full seven extensions), we added a few extra loose waves with a curling iron to pony-up! Bam, isn’t she pretty?! Our girl can head out just like this or quickly turn this glam pony into a next-level bun. Just see below.

Step 2: Now maximize the fullness of your extensions by easily creating a full bun. Use an Invisibobble Original Traceless Hair Ring (Amazon.com) and loop it around your ponytail.

Step 3: Next, loop the ring (or hair elastic, if you prefer) again while gathering the ends of your long extensions and real hair to form a bun.

Step 4: Tug at your bun to round it out and create fullness from all sides. Set shape in place and hide loose strands with hairpins. Spray in place.

Viola! Your bun is in ready to p-a-r-t-y!
