Ooh La La! How to Wear Revealing Clothes (and Still Look Like a Total Adult)

You don’t have to pull a Miley Cyrus, but there are definite ways to rock slightly revealing attire during summer without looking inappropriate. Whether you want to show off a little cleavage or a lot of leg, there are ways to do it without going overboard. Here’s how to wear revealing clothes and look amazing.

We’ve all seen the likes of Kim Kardashian and Selena Gomez flaunt their skin in sheer tops. Not surprisingly, this is one of the most effective ways to pull off a revealing look.

It’s approachable in the way something far more sexy just isn’t—and it’s not all that difficult to pull off. Granted, you don’t want to wear a sheer top to, say, your kid’s soccer game, but in other environments it may be just the thing to vanquish memories of your worn out tees and jeans. This Jean Paul Gaultier tunic ($395, below), for example, looks right at home over the sleek layer underneath. Keep the colors monochromatic for a more chic, grown-up look.

A little goes a long way. This is one circumstance when “less is more” definitely applies. Sexy sophistication is easily conveyed when only a hint of skin is revealed—nothing over the top or so outrageous that you feel more uncomfortable than confident. This BCBGMAXAZRIA jumpsuit ($248, above) features a sheer panel at the neckline for a look that’s more discreet than domineering. The suit itself is lean and elegant, so the end result is undeniably posh. How can you go wrong?

Feeling hesitant about this look? It’s easier to sport a sheer garment when it’s patterned. The idea is to detract from the actual see-through fabric, yet still honor the look and make it an integral part of your wardrobe. This Denim & Supply Ralph Lauren maxi skirt ($98, above) features a playful, deeply saturated dot print. The sheerness is still evident, yet this is far easier to pull off at, say, a casual lunch with friends.

That summer-to-fall transition can be a tricky time for our wardrobes. But something lightweight and airy that offers coverage is a great option for those slightly cooler days that don’t call for a jacket or a heavy sweater. This Brochu Walker sweater ($63.50, above) is made with linen, a great summer fabric. It layers well over a sleek tank and is easy to dress up.

While you’re still enjoying 90+ degree temps, though, reach for a dress that, while quite revealing, is perfect for soaking up some sunshine (with sunscreen, natch). This Wildfox Gigi dress ($165, above) epitomizes warm-weather sex appeal with its open back and double front slits. You’ll show a little leg without rivaling Angelina at the Oscars.

Business in the front, party in the back! This Zobha tee ($39.99, above) features an open V back and an elegant drape that lends it a touch of dressy charm. It’s so versatile that it can be worn just about anywhere, from date night to the gym.
