Next to assembling IKEA furniture, trying to fold a fitted sheet is probably one of the most frustrating tasks to attempt. Until I knew how to fold a fitted sheet properly, I ended up just balling the whole thing up and shoving it in my linen closet. It’s those damn stretchy, rounded edges that make it so complicated! But it’s really not that hard to fold a fitted sheet once you know how to and you have practiced a few times.
Below are the six simple steps that will get you from a crinkled ball of fabric to a crisply-folded fitted sheet.
How to Fold a Fitted Sheet:
Step 1: Stand holding the sheet by the two adjacent corners of one of the shorter edges of your fitted sheet. Place one hand inside each of these two corners.
Step 2: Bring your right hand to your left, and fold the corner in your right hand over the one in your left, letting that sheet corner turn other side out.
Step 3: Reach down and pick up the corner that is hanging in front; bring it up, and fold it over the two corners in your left hand just like you did the first time. Again, the new corner will then be other side out again.
Step 4: Bring the last corner up, and fold it over the others; with its right side showing, it should envelop the other three corners.
Step 5: Lay the folded sheet on your bed and straighten it into the shape shown three photos down in the series above.
Step 6: Fold the edges in so all of the elastic is in the center and continue folding into a rectangle, smaller and smaller until it reaches the size you want (and depending on the size of the sheet).
That’s it! Once you get the step down where you bring your hands together and fold one corner over the other, you basically know how to fold a fitted sheet. You repeat that step for each corner until you’ve done all four. So, no more balled up sheets in your linen closet!
