On Feb. 14, 2024, the Kansas City Chiefs celebrated their Super Bowl win with a grand parade. Unfortunately, the celebration ended in chaos as 22 people were hit by gunfire, with others left terrified and running for cover. One of the victims of the Kansas City shooting, a mom of two, succumbed to her injuries and passed away (via The Guardian).
The mom of two who was killed was identified as Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a local radio station’s DJ. She was at the Kansas City shooting site with her husband and adult son, a die-hard sports fan. Her son was also shot at the celebration parade.
Amongst the wounded, there were several kids as well. The exact number is yet to be confirmed, but it is reportedly within eight to eleven. Fortunately, they are all expected to recover. As per the Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves at the news conference on Wednesday, three individuals have been arrested, and firearms have been recovered (via BBC).
About 800 police officers were already present at the Kansas City Chiefs parade before the shooting. They responded promptly to the sound of gunshots and opened an investigation. Moreover, the Fire Department provided aid to the injured. The wounded were transported to three local hospitals, with the eight immediately life-threatening cases taken to a hospital that was ten minutes away from the shooting site.

The children injured during the Kansas City shooting are thankfully on the road to recovery. The Children’s Mercy Kansas City spokesperson, Lisa Augustine, stated that the hospital was treating 11 children. Some of the kids suffered gunshot wounds, while others were injured during the stampede (via Associated Press).
The children are aged between six and fifteen, as per the statement of Chief Nursing Officer Stephanie Meyer. She exclaimed, “The one word I would use to describe what we saw and how they felt when they came to us was fear” (via BBC). One of the kids’ parent is also being treated in the same hospital as per the update on Wednesday evening.
