Summer vacation is here with a vengeance. The kids are happily ensconced in their summer daycare and I’m somewhat happily working my summer schedule.
I work for a school district which means it’s a ghost town around here during the summer. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot to do in preparation of the next school year and only six short weeks in which to do it. Still, a large part of our working population is currently backpacking in Peru or studying geology in Utah.
With so many gone over the summer, our office adjusts our work schedule. We work four ten hour days and have every Friday off.
I love having Fridays off.
I don’t love working ten hours a day.
Everyone’s told me I’ll get used to it in a week or so and then will miss it when summer is over. I’m not sure if Everyone hasn’t been in the sun too long.
I am enjoying the casual atmosphere. All summer long, there are potlucks and long lunch break walks. Jeans are the go-to uniform and there is more time for projects waiting in the wings.
The kids and I are adjusting with freezer meals and hot dogs. And we’ve planned out fun things to do every Friday from visit a local farm to going to the beach to movies. We created a “vision board” of summer and are busy adding to it every day. I
’m not quite sure we’re going to get to everything before school starts, but we’re having a blast trying.
If you’re a working parent, how do you plan for fun in the summer?
