Helpful Tips for New Moms To Breastfeed Your Baby in Public

During the first few months, infants mostly rely on breastfeeds. While some moms are comfortable nursing in public places, some might not be confident doing the same. As the National Breastfeeding Month wraps up, here are some handy tips for breastfeeding your baby in cafés, shops, or any other public place for a stress-free experience for you and your bundle of joy.

Know your breastfeeding in public rights

Breastfeeding in public places is your right, and you should never be made to feel uncomfortable about it. That is why it is essential to know your rights. Every country has nursing dos and don’ts or laws for breastfeeding in public, so make sure you read them and understand them well.

You can rely on government or public health websites to learn all about the laws. Even discussing it with a healthcare professional might prove helpful. For added precaution, you can carry a copy of the laws to show anyone if needed.

Dress in comfortable attire to breastfeed your baby in public

What you wear while breastfeeding is ultimately a personal choice. Some moms like to wear loose tops to lift and feed their babies as and when needed. Some are comfortable wearing tops with zips that can easily be opened without lifting the top while feeding. Moms who still feel a little conscious while breastfeeding in public usually place a scarf or thin cloth over their chest while nursing.

Nowadays, maternity clothes are available in many new styles online and in stores. If you love wearing dresses, pick the ones with hidden zippers around the chest area to feed your baby efficiently. Overall, research the outfits carefully and wear whatever you are comfortable in.

Try to know the place well for a stress-free breastfeeding session

It is always better to research about the public place you are visiting with your baby. For instance, if you go to a park, search whether they have a breastfeeding room or some secluded area to nurse your baby freely.

Similarly, while going to the mall, look for areas or breastfeeding rooms for stress-free nursing. You can research the place online or ask your family or friends for recommendations. Knowing these things ahead of time will make it easier for you to feed your baby whenever they are hungry. It will also save you time and make you less anxious.

If possible, take someone along while going out in a public place with your breastfeeding baby. This way, you will have someone to talk to or help you search for the right place if needed.

Apart from your partner, you can also take your parents, sister, or friends who know about breastfeeding places. This will be especially helpful if you are stepping out with your baby for the first time.

Choose the right place for breastfeeding

Make sure the place you decide to breastfeed your baby in is clean and hygienic. Do not feed your infant in a public toilet, even in an emergency. If you can’t find an apt place, head back to your car to breastfeed your little one.

You can even nurse in changing rooms if allowed. Otherwise, always carry a breastfeeding cover so you can feed your baby in the middle of the park or mall in an emergency without feeling uncomfortable.

There is nothing to be ashamed of while breastfeeding in public. However, as mentioned earlier, not everyone feels comfortable nursing in public places. So, remember these points to ensure a happy experience while breastfeeding your little one in public.
