Britney Spears Scores A Win In Her Conservatorship Battle

After nearly 14 years under the control of her father, Britney Spears has finally scored a win in her effort to end her conservatorship. On July 14, 2021, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny granted the pop icon new legal representation after the abrupt resignation of her court-appointed attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III (via NBC News).

Spears has chosen former federal prosector Mathew Rosengart to be her new counsel, who told the court that he intends to file a petition to end the conservatorship. “If he loves his daughter, it is time to step aside — to move forward,” he said.

Britney Spears: “This Conservatorship Has Allowed My Dad To Ruin My Life”

During her testimony in yesterday’s hearing, an emotional Spears stated that she was “extremely scared” of her Jamie Spears, who she claimed would “show up drunk and embarrass her.” She told the court that not only did she want the conservatorship ended, she wants her father investigated for the alleged abuse she suffered including diet restrictions and a reported 70-hour work week.

“I’m here to get rid of my dad and charge him with conservatorship abuse,” Spears told the court. “This conservatorship has allowed my dad to ruin my life.” She added, “Their goal was to make me feel crazy, and I’m not. And that’s not OK.”

After her appearance in court, a jubilant Britney Spears posted a video of herself riding a horse and doing cartwheels to celebrate the judge’s ruling and to thank all those who have supported her in this fight. “Coming along, folks … coming along  !!!!! New with real representation today … I feel GRATITUDE and BLESSED !!!! Thank you to my fans who are supporting me,” the caption reads. “You have no idea what it means to me be supported by such awesome fans !!!! God bless you all !!!!! Pssss this is me celebrating by horseback riding and doing cartwheels today  !!!! #FreeBritney”

Britney Spears Has An Unlikely Ally In Matt Gaetz

In a move that surprised much of the Internet, Florida’s Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz attended a #FreeBritney rally outside the courtroom and delivered a blistering rebuke of Jamie Spears and the system that allowed the conservatorship to last as long as it has.

“If this case does not result in freedom for Britney Spears, it is a black eye for the American justice system,” Gaetz told the crowd. “There were grifters in this process, they knew what she wanted. And now the whole world knows what Britney wants – it is the freedom and liberty that should be offered to every single American.”

Gaetz went on to say that Spears has “been abused” by the media, her father, and the American justice system. He added that “a federal change in the law” is what will be required to end the conservatorship Britney and millions of others find themselves forced to live under.
