Materials
- Air-dry or oven-bake clay in a variety of colors
- Stretchy bracelet elastic
- Thin skewers or toothpicks
- Citronella essential oil
- Tea tree essential oil
- Lemongrass essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Eucalyptus essential oil
Procedure
- To make the DIY mosquito-repelling bracelets, pinch off pieces of clay and roll them into uniformly sized-balls.
- Carefully thread the rolled beads onto skewers. Air-dry or bake per the manufacturer’s instructions. Wait for the beads to dry completely or cool after baking.
- Measure a piece of elastic for your kiddo’s wrist and add 4-6 inches. When you’re done threading beads, you need enough extra to knot the bracelet off.
- Decide on a color scheme or pattern. Then, thread the beads onto the elastic thread. Following this, leave a few inches of elastic on both ends and knot the bracelet off according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- If instructions are not available, use a modified surgeon’s knot. First, start by crossing over the two ends of the thread. Then, using your right hand, wrap it around twice. Pull the ends to tighten the beads. Hold the first knot in place and repeat the process three more times to ensure the bracelet is secure. Trim the ends when you’re done.
- Add a few drops of essential oils to the beads to make the bracelet mosquito-repellent. Let it dry before wearing.
Your DIY mosquito-repelling bracelets are ready for your kids. You can use as many beads as you like and make them with a leather cord or gold chain for older children and family members. The options are endless when you start playing around with this DIY project.
