How to Make Vegan Buttercream Frosting

This rich, four-ingredient vegan buttercream frosting is all you need to decorate your desserts. The recipe is quick, simple, and tastes heavenly. Even beginners trying their hand at making dessert for the first time can try this recipe. We are sure it will turn out excellent. You just need good quality vegan butter and be familiar with the techniques for perfect frosting.

This recipe calls for a stand mixer. However, you can use a hand mixer (or some elbow grease and a beater) to make this vegan buttercream frosting. If you want frosting in different colors, add vegan-friendly food coloring like chocolate, caramel, peppermint, lemon, etc. Use creamy plant milk (with full fat), like soy, cashew, coconut, or oat milk for best results.

If you plan to make it ahead of time, you can make the frosting two days in advance and refrigerate it. Bring the frosting to room temperature and mix it well again before putting it in the piping bag.

Freeze the remaining frosting in a freezer bag or a container, which will remain good for at least three months. This vegan buttercream frosting recipe makes enough for an 8-9″ layer cake or 24 cupcakes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup vegan butter, softened to room temperature (not melted)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 tablespoons non-dairy milk
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preparation

  1. To make the vegan buttercream frosting, pour the softened butter into the bowl of a stand mixer with a paddle attachment. Beat the butter until smooth, about 2 minutes.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar, about a cup at a time. Mix starting at low speed and gradually increasing to medium until all the powdered sugar is mixed in.
  3. Add milk and vanilla, and beat on medium speed for 3-4 minutes until everything is well combined. Scrape the bowl to incorporate everything together.
  4. If the frosting seems too thick, add more milk, one tablespoon at a time. If the frosting is too thin and runny, add more powdered sugar, half a cup at a time, until you reach the desired consistency.

Voila, you can now pipe your vegan buttercream frosting onto cupcakes or cakes. To put the frosting in the piping bag, take a large glass, fit your piping bag with a tip, fold the edges around the cup, and fill the bag with the vegan buttercream frosting. Once filled, remove it from the glass, secure the open end, and start piping on your sweet treats.

So, mamas, get the ingredients and start making this yummy vegan buttercream frosting for your dessert recipes.
